A 7-year-old boy was run over and killed on a highway Sunday evening after falling out of the back window of the vehicle he was riding in, according to the Maryland State Police.
The driver who struck the boy, police said, left the scene and remains at large.
According to a news release, shortly before 7:30 p.m., troopers from the Glen Burnie Barrack responded to Interstate 97, north of Route 32, following reports of a crash.
There, they found the boy and a 66-year-old woman from Hagerstown who police believe is the boy’s grandmother.
A preliminary investigation indicated the boy was riding in the rear passenger’s seat of the woman’s Mazda when he rolled down the window and fell out of the car, police said.
The child was soon struck by an oncoming vehicle, described as a 2016-2019 Honda Civic, according to the news release. Authorities did not provide the color of the vehicle.
The driver of the Civic drove away after the crash, police said, and investigators are looking for a vehicle that may have damage to its front left wheel well.
