As high school graduations descend across Anne Arundel County, some seniors are looking ahead to military academies.

Whether the decision comes from a military family, an urge to serve their country or to develop their skills — these seven students explained their reasons to attend and what they hope to do.

Naval Academy Elizabeth Gilman Elizabeth Gilman of Annapolis wanted to set up a career in the military because it meant she could do something outsideherself.

Her parents, Mary and Thane Gilman, were in the Navy and growing up in Annapolis, she was familiar with the Naval Academy. When it came to applying to academies, she turned to her parents for some guidance.

“They said work really hard and keep your goals in your mind,” said Gilman, a senior at Annapolis High.

Though her parents did not force her to apply, they were overjoyed when she decided to go, according to Gilman.

“Throughout my life, just doing sports and community services were the two things I enjoyed. I was a leader and helping people,” Gilman said. “There is no bigger See MILITARY , page 6
