Louisville jumps to No. 3 in AP Top 25
Louisville surged to No. 3 in The Associated Press college football poll Sunday, matching the best ranking in school history, and Ohio State moved up to No. 2 behind Alabama.
The Crimson Tide received 50 first-place votes after coming from 21 points down to win, 48-43, at Mississippi on Saturday. The Buckeyes moved up one spot after a 45-24 victory at Oklahoma.
No team made a bigger move than Louisville, which jumped seven spots and received six-first place votes after Lamar Jackson and the Cardinals beat Florida State, 63-20. The Seminoles slid 10 spots to No. 13.
Louisville was No. 3 on Nov. 5, 2006, during coach Bobby Petrino's first stint with the Cardinals.
North Dakota State didn't make the rankings, but received 74 points after upsetting Iowa, 23-21 — the most points ever for a Football Championship Subdivision team. Iowa dropped out.
Here are some other takeaways from the poll.
No. 23 Mississippi and No. 25 Oklahoma both managed to stay in the rankings after dropping to 1-2 on the season. The Rebels, who opened the season with a loss to Florida State, dropped four spots. The Sooners, who lost their opener to Houston, fell 11 spots. Since the poll expanded to 25 in 1989, teams with 1-2 records have been ranked only six previous times. The last 1-2 team to be ranked was Notre Dame on Sept. 12, 1999.
No. 20 Nebraska is back in the rankings for the first time since Dec. 7, 2014.
No. 22 San Diego State is ranked for the first time since 1995.
Terps receive votes: Maryland received three votes in the AP poll and four in the Amway Coaches Top-25 poll, meaning they're tied for 41st and alone in 36th nationally, respectively.
Maryland last received votes in the AP poll in 2014, after beating Penn State to improve to 6-3, and in the coaches poll in 2013, when it was No. 25 in the AP poll and took a 63-0 loss to Florida State and didn't get a vote the next week.
Saturday night's games:Davis Webb threw his fourth touchdown pass of the game to break a tie with 3:41 to play and host California got its first win over a ranked team in nearly four years, beating No. 11 Texas, 50-43.
Webb threw for 397 yards, ran for a score and connected on a 12-yard pass to Chad Hansen that broke a tie at 43 and gave coach Sonny Dykes his biggest win in four seasons with the Golden Bears (2-1).
D'Onta Foreman ran for 157 yards and two touchdowns, while Chris Warren added 118 yards on the ground and two scores for the Longhorns (2-1), who were looking for their first 3-0 start since 2012.
Texas had a chance to match Cal's last touchdown, but Shane Buechele was sacked on third down deep in his own territory.
Josh Rosen threw for 307 yards and two touchdowns as visiting UCLA defeated Brigham Young, 17-14.
The Bruins (2-1) held the Cougars (1-2) to 273 yards, including 23 on the ground. BYU had negative rushing yards until late in the third quarter and 91 of those offensive yards came on their final possession.
BYU quarterback Taysom Hill finished with 250 passing yards, one touchdown one interception and was sacked four times.
Clayton Thorson threw for 320 yards and three touchdowns, Justin Jackson rushed for 94 yards, and host Northwestern defeated Duke, 24-13.
After being held to 7 points by Illinois State last week, the Wildcats (1-2) scored on the game's opening drive. Thorson connected with Garrett Dickerson for a 26-yard touchdown reception, capping a 10-play, 75-yard drive.
