CHICAGO — The Orioles rode a career day for third baseman Manny Machado, an explosive start to the game and another impressive start by rookie Dylan Bundy to a 10-2 victory over the Chicago White Sox on Sunday at U.S. Cellular Field.

Machado joined an exclusive group of Orioles by hitting three home runs — in the first, second, and third innings — and drove in a career-high seven runs.

“The team hasn't been swinging it like we have in the past, so it was a great day to see everything have consistent at-bats and consistent swings,” Machado said. “Hopefully, we continue this trip and keep pitching and swinging like we have.”

His first home run staked the Orioles to a 2-0 lead in the first inning. His second came in a six-run second inning, and his third drove in both of the Orioles' runs in the third inning. Machado grounded out and lined out in his last two at-bats.

He wasn't the only one who wore his hitting shoes to the ballpark Sunday. First baseman Chris Davis and shortstop J.J. Hardy also homered, extending the Orioles' major league leading total to 168 (the Toronto Blue Jays are next with 159).

Most of that damage came off pitcher James Shields, who recorded four outs and allowed eight runs.

“We caught a pitcher not on top of his game today,” manager Buck Showalter said. “He's pitched a lot better than that since he came over.”

Every Orioles starter but catcher Matt Wieters had a hit, though Wieters had a deep drive to right field caught at the top of the wall in the second inning. The Orioles had 12 hits and tied a season high with nine walks. They continue a 10-game road trip tonight with four games in Oakland and then three in San Francisco.

“It's two out of three on the road against a competitive team,” Showalter said. “We'll put it behind us.”

Sunday best: Bundy continued to dazzle, striking out a career-high nine batters while going six innings and allowing two runs on four hits.

Bundy struck out the side in the first inning, but unlike his previous two starts, didn't carry a no-hit bid deep into the game. A towering fly ball hit down the left-field line by White Sox slugger Jose Abreu landed for a double to open the second inning.

White Sox right fielder Adam Eaton walked to open the fourth inning, took third base on a single by Abreu, and scored on a sacrifice fly by Todd Frazier. Abreu also homered in the sixth inning to score Chicago's second run.

“As you can see, I missed a few spots,” Bundy said. “Abreu, that was supposed to be in and it was right down the middle, maybe a little bit away, too. You've just got to keep focusing when you've got a nine-run lead like that and make the pitches you need to.”

Bundy is now 3-2 as a starter with a 3.00 ERA in 27 innings with 33 strikeouts and six walks.

Shutdown relief:Ubaldo Jimenez had pitched just once since July 10, and not at all since July 28, but did his team a service by saving the rest of the bullpen and pitching three perfect innings in relief of Bundy.

“I don't know what was more impressive, Dylan, or Ubaldo giving us three big innings there,” Showalter said. “We really needed that.”

Finally: After moving down in the lineup Saturday, Davis was back batting cleanup and responded with his first home run since July?10, ending his longest drought as an Oriole. He reached base four times Sunday, also taking first on a hit-by-pitch and a pair of walks.
