1st-round pick Stanley signed; veteran corner Powers added
The Ravens crossed a couple of items off their offseason to-do list Friday, getting their first-round draft pick under contract, adding a veteran cornerback they've been interested in and creating room on the back end of their roster.
The Ravens have three open roster spots after Friday's releases of wide receiver Marlon Brown, defensive end Nordly Capi and defensive backs Jermaine Whitehead and Nick Perry.
With the moves, the Ravens lessened the logjam at positions where they're deepest in numbers, such as wide receiver and defensive end-outside linebacker, while addressing one of the roster's perceived holes at cornerback.
Powers, who has spent the past three seasons with the Arizona Cardinals, was one of the more accomplished corners remaining on a thin free-agent market. That the Ravens signed him after Thursday means he does not factor into the compensatory pick formula, and the team remains in line to collect a 2017 draft pick for the loss of offensive guard Kelechi Osemele to the Oakland Raiders.
Powers will give the Ravens another potential starting option alongside top corners Jimmy Smith and Shareece Wright. Powers, 28, played extensively in the slot and nickel back role for the Cardinals last year, starting all 13 games he was active and posting 52 tackles, one sack, nine passes defended and one interception.
A 2009 third-round pick of the Indianapolis Colts out of Auburn, Powers spent his first four NFL seasons in Indianapolis and started 42 games for the Colts before leaving in free agency.
Powers figures to receive a significant opportunity to start in the slot. The Ravens still have veteran Kyle Arrington and Will Davis, and they drafted cornerbacks Tavon Young (fourth round) and Maurice Canady (sixth round).
Young cornerbacks Julian Wilson and Sheldon Price also remain on the roster. However, their depth at the position became a bigger problem in recent days as Smith underwent a procedure on his surgically repaired foot and Jumal Rolle suffered a season-ending torn Achilles tendon during a workout.
With Stanley's deal, the Ravens have nine of their 11 draft picks under contract. The two exceptions are third-round defensive end-outside linebacker Bronson Kaufusi and sixth-round wide receiver Keenan Reynolds. The deal with Reynolds should get done soon after Friday's news that Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus has submitted a request to allow Reynolds to play in the NFL while fulfilling his service requirement in the Navy Reserve to the office of the secretary of defense for final approval.
Stanley, a former Notre Dame standout who was drafted sixth overall, became the second-highest pick to sign. Under the current slotting system, his deal is expected to be worth a little more than $20 million over four years. The deal will also include a fifth-year option for 2020.
