Thomas W. Happel, a lifelong salesman who was active in youth sports, died of a massive hemorrhage March 10 at University of Maryland Medical Center.

The longtime Woodstock resident was 57.

Thomas Willard Happel, who was the son of Richard Happel, a Baltimore County police officer, and Ann Happel, a homemaker, was born in Baltimore and raised in Catonsville.

A golfer and a Ravens and Orioles fan, Mr. Happel was active in his son’s athletic endeavors and was a volunteer coach for the Edmondson Heights Recreation Council, Howard County Youth Baseball and the Lochearn Community Club.

He also volunteered with Loyola High School’s swimming and water polo programs, and with the St. Bonaventure University swim team.

Last year, he was the men’s league co-champion at Willow Springs Golf Course in Howard County. He was also a member of Old Hickory Country Club in Fort Myers, Fla.

Mr. Happel was a communicant of the Roman Catholic Church of the Resurrection, 3175 Paulskirk Drive, Ellicott City, where a memorial Mass will be offered at 11 a.m. Saturday.
