Workers on strike at the IKEA Distribution Center in Perryville were set to meet with the home furnishings retailer and a federal mediator Thursday and Friday.
About 320 members of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) Local I460, District 4, rejected the company’s contract proposal on Nov. 14 and walked off the job at midnight. The sides have been unable to reach an agreement on union demands for cost-of-living wage increases and seniority protections. The union said it planned to meet with IKEA and a federal mediator to work toward resolving the dispute. Members of Local 1460 are walking a picket line outside the Cecil County distribution center, which opened in 2002 and serves 39 IKEA stores.
The IAM represents about 600,000 active and retired members in various industries, including aerospace, defense, airlines, railroad, transit, healthcare and automotive.
