BAYAMÓN, Puerto Rico — Power was restored to nearly all electrical customers across Puerto Rico on Wednesday after a sweeping blackout plunged the U.S. territory into darkness on New Year’s Eve.

By Wednesday afternoon, power was back up for 98% of Puerto Rico’s 1.47 million utility customers, said Luma Energy, the private company overseeing transmission and distribution of power in the archipelago. Lights returned to households as well as to Puerto Rico’s hospitals, water plants and sewage facilities after the massive outage that exposed the persistent electricity problems plaguing the island.

Still, the company warned that customers could still see temporary outages in the coming days. It said full restoration could take up to two days. “Given the fragile nature of the grid, we will need to manage available generation to customer demand, which will likely require rotating temporary outages,” said Juan Saca, president of Luma Energy.

The lights went off in Puerto Rico at 5:30 a.m. Tuesday, darkening most of the island as people prepared to ring in 2025. Authorities are still investigating the cause of the outage, but Luma Energy said a preliminary review pointed to a failure in an underground electric line in the south of the territory.

Vegas blast kills 1: One person died and seven were hurt Wednesday when a Tesla Cybertruck that appeared to be carrying fireworks exploded outside President-elect Donald Trump’s Las Vegas hotel, authorities said.

Las Vegas Metropolitan Police and Clark County Fire Department officials told a news conference that a person died inside the futuristic-looking pickup. Seven people nearby had minor injuries, and several were taken to a hospital.

The fire in the valet area of the Trump International Hotel Las Vegas was reported at 8:40 a.m., the county said.

According to a law enforcement official, the truck was rented via the Turo app and appeared to have a load of fireworks.

Law enforcement officials have not ruled out terrorism, a person familiar with the matter said.

President Joe Biden was briefed on the explosion, which came hours after a driver rammed a truck into a crowd in New Orleans’ famed French Quarter early on New Year’s Day, killing at least 15 people before being shot to death by police.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk said Wednesday on X that “we have now confirmed that the explosion was caused by very large fireworks and/or a bomb carried in the bed of the rented Cybertruck and is unrelated to the vehicle itself. All vehicle telemetry was positive at the time of the explosion.”

In Las Vegas, witness Ana Bruce, visiting from Brazil, said she heard three explosions. “The first one where we saw the fire, the second one, I guess, was the battery or something like that, and the third was the big one that smoked the entire area and was the moment when everyone was told to evacuate and stay away,” she said.

Her travel companion, Alcides Antunes, showed video he took of flames lapping the sides of the silver-colored vehicle.

The 64-story hotel is just off the Las Vegas Strip.

Fatal fireworks in Hawaii: A New Year’s Eve fireworks explosion in a Honolulu- area neighborhood killed at least three people and critically injured 20 others, authorities said.

The accident occurred just before midnight outside a home, the Honolulu Fire Department said in a statement. The neighborhood is near Honolulu’s international airport and a joint U.S. Air Force and Navy base.

Two people were declared dead at the scene, and the other 20 victims were transported to hospitals, according to Honolulu Emergency Medical Services.

“I’ve been in EMS over 30 years and this is probably one of the worst calls I’ve ever been on as far as the immense tragedy and amount of patients and severity of the injuries,” Honolulu Emergency Services Department Director Dr. Jim Ireland said early Wednesday.

A statement from Honolulu Mayor Rick Blangiardi put the death toll at three.

The fire department said it was investigating the cause of the blast and had no details about how the accident occurred. It said there was no fire at the home.

Attacks in Germany: The German government Wednesday condemned incidents on New Year’s Eve in which police and firefighters were attacked and injured, mostly by fireworks.

In Berlin, 30 police officers and one firefighter were injured in confrontations or attacks during New Year’s Eve, leading to 400 arrests, city officials said. Hundreds of police officers from across the country were deployed to the capital to help prevent further violence.

Montenegro rampage: At least 10 people, including two children, were killed and four others were seriously wounded Wednesday in a shooting rampage that followed a bar brawl in a western Montenegrin city, officials said. The shooter was on the run.

Police identified the attacker as 45-year-old Aco Martinovic. He killed the owner of the bar in the city of Cetinje, the bar owner’s children and his own family members, Interior Minister Danilo Saranovic said at a news conference.

Police dispatched special troops to search for the attacker in Cetinje, about 18 miles northwest of the capital, Podgorica. All the roads in and out of the city have been blocked as police swarmed the streets.

Martinovic was at the bar throughout the day with other guests when the brawl erupted, said Police Commissioner Lazar Scepanovic. He said Martinovic then went home, brought back a weapon and opened fire at around 5:30 p.m.

Montenegro, population 620,000, is known for its gun culture, and many people traditionally have weapons.

Nuclear diplomacy: Pakistan and India on Wednesday exchanged lists of their nuclear assets as part of a bilateral pact that bars them from attacking each other’s nuclear facilities.

The two sides exchange such lists on the first day of January every year.

Pakistan and India have had strained relations since their independence from colonial British rule in 1947 over the disputed Himalayan region of Kashmir. They have fought three wars, built up armies and developed nuclear weapons.

Iranians executed: Saudi Arabia said Wednesday that it executed six Iranian men for drug smuggling, sparking objections from Iran as the nations try to mend ties.

The Saudi Interior Ministry said the six men had been caught smuggling hashish and were executed after an appeal was rejected by the country’s Supreme Court.

In Tehran, the foreign ministry summoned the Saudi ambassador in protest, the official IRNA news agency said. Iran will send a delegation to Riyadh to discuss the case, IRNA said.

The rivals reestablished diplomatic relations in 2023, after seven years of tension.
