A former Maryland correctional officer was sentenced to prison and ordered to pay over $50,000 in restitution in a disability fraud case, according to a statement by Maryland Attorney General Anthony Brown.
Racquel Britt Davis, 51, of Baltimore, was sentenced to 10 years in prison with all but six months suspended, and ordered to pay $50,251 in restitution for submitting false disability claims for three years while she was employed as a correctional officer.
From May 2018 to June 2021, Davis submitted 18 fraudulent claims under short-term disability and accident supplemental insurance policies that she bought through the American Family Life Assurance Company of Columbus, according to the statement, issued Friday.
Brown’s office said she submitted false documentation from doctors that she either never saw or who did not indicate that she had a disability during the time period of her submitted claims. Davis is also accused of submitting documentation from the workplace stating her disability was approved.
Davis pleaded guilty on Nov. 21 to one count of felony theft of $25,000 to $100,000. In addition to serving time, Davis received five years of supervised probation and is required to pay the restitution to AFLAC.
Davis’ attorney declined to comment.
