An executive order from President Donald Trump will focus on prioritizing school choice programs and freeing up federal spending toward the initiative.

A White House official confirmed to The Hill details of the order, signed Wednesday, that will direct the Education Department to “prioritize the use of discretionary grant programs for school choice.” It also directs the department to issue guidance on how much money to give schools for K-12 scholarship programs.

The order, first reported by CBS, also directs the Department of Health and Human Services to provide new guidance on how states with block grants can use those funds “to support private and faith-based institutions.”

Newly sworn-in Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth is also receiving guidance in the executive order to create a plan for how military families can use DoD funding to send kids to a school of their choice.

The next interior secretary is also being directed to come up with a plan on how families with children attending Bureau of Indian Education schools can use federal funds to send them to a school of their choice, the outlet reports.

The news comes as Trump issued an executive order Tuesday aimed at cutting federal support for gender transitions for minors and 2024 National Assessment of Educational Progress scores released Wednesday show U.S. fourth and eighth-grade students are still lagging behind pre-pandemic levels in reading and math.

Trump’s nominee for Education Secretary Linda McMahon and Interior Secretary nominee Doug Burgum have not yet been confirmed.

His Health and Human Services Secretary nominee Robert F. Kennedy Jr. underwent his confirmation hearing on Wednesday.
