TRIPS, TIPS & DEALS
Yellowstone family bargain
Family travel can be a great learning experience for the kids — and costly for parents. Austin Adventures, which offers trips around the world, is helping to take a bite out of the price with a promotion on some of its family adventures for 2017. Here's the deal: A family with two kids — at least one under the age of 12 — pays for only one of the kids, which translates to a savings in the thousands of dollars. For example, Austin has a six-day/five-night Yellowstone National Park package that includes rafting on the Yellowstone River, guided hiking in the park's backcountry, horseback riding in the Absaroka Mountains of Montana, watching Old Faithful erupt and much more. Adults pay $2,698 each, and the cost for the first child would be $2,428. The cost for the second child, which would normally be $2,158, would be free. The deal requires the family to share a room and must be booked by Nov. 1. Info: 800-575-1540,
Peak leaf-peeping
Depending on where you are in the U.S., fall colors are peaking or getting pretty close to that point. The Upper Midwest and New England should be alive right now with brilliant reds, golds and yellows. And in the West, the glowing aspens will light up the mountains at varying times depending on the elevation. If you're at a loss for where to head for the best leaf-peeping, Jetsetter offers 11 fall foliage road trips. Some are pretty predictable, such as the Blue Ridge Parkway from Virginia to North Carolina, New Hampshire's Kancamagus Highway and the San Juan Skyway in Colorado. The list is heavily weighted toward New England and the East, with six entries. The Midwest is represented by the Lake Superior Circle Tour, comprising Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota and Ontario.
