No. 12 Oakland Mills coach Brad Howell said his team needed something big to happen to beat host Glenelg in the Class 2A South region dual final Wednesday night.
He needed someone to find a way to score a major upset and everything else to fall their way. And while the Scorpions gave the Gladiators everything they could handle — they held a lead five different times and even had a four-point advantage with four matches to go — it still wasn’t quite enough to beat mighty Glenelg.
The No. 3 Gladiators stayed strong until their dominant stretch of wrestlers shined and closed the match with four consecutive wins to pull away with a 40-23 win over No. 12 Oakland Mills. It’s the fourth straight season Glenelg (22-0) has won a regional dual crown and its third consecutive Class 2A South region title.
In the semifinals, the top-seeded Gladiators defeated Southern-AA, 51-16, and No. 2 seed Oakland Mills held off third-seeded La Plata, 46-27.
Montgomery Blair 40, Catonsville 30: The top-seeded Comets may have lost in the semifinals to Montgomery Blair in the Class 4A North Region tournament, but they still have a chance to do something no other team in school history has ever done on the mat.
Should Catonsville defeat the underdog Chesapeake-BC in a makeup dual-meet match Tuesday, they would finish regular-season dual-meet competition with a 14-0 record.
No previous Comets wrestlers have ever gone undefeated and no other team has reached 14 wins.
They weren’t so fortunate in the postseason as the normally pin-happy squad didn’t earn as many falls as they normally get.
“I think we were on the same level as them, but wrestling-wise, they were tougher on the mat and all the matches we lost we were giving up pins and we didn’t pin them when we got our wins, so they deserved to win, they were the better team,” Catonsville coach Eric Warm said.
