A man (Jack Black) who may have magical powers enlists the help of his orphaned nephew to find a clock that could destroy the planet. Cate Blanchett plays the good witch who lives next door.

“Life Itself”

Drama, R.

Dan Fogelman, creator of “This Is Us,” directs an ensemble that revolves around a couple (Oscar Isaac, Olivia Wild) expecting their first child. Samuel L. Jackson, Annette Bening and Mandy Patinkin also appear.

“Night School”

Comedy, PG-13.

Kevin Hart joins a ragtag group of adults attempting to earn their GEDs. “Girls Trip” breakout star Tiffany Haddish plays the teacher.

“The Old Man & the Gun”

Crime/drama, PG-13. Robert Redford stars as a gentlemanly bank robber on the run. Along the way, he befriends a woman (Sissy Spacek) who questions his choices.

“Smallfoot”

Animated/family, PG. Who’s discovering whom? A yeti (voiced by Channing Tatum) sets out to prove humans are real after being shunned by his community. Common, Gina Rodriguez, Yara Shahidi, Zendaya and LeBron James lend their voices.

“The Happy Prince”

Drama, R. Rupert Everett (“My Best Friend’s Wedding”), who wrote, directs and stars, plays Oscar Wilde in his later years. Colin Firth and Emily Watson co-star.

“A Star Is Born”

Drama, R. Bradley Cooper directs and stars in a remake of the story of an older musician who meets a young singer (Lady Gaga) and helps her achieve stardom.

“Venom”

Action/sci-fi, PG-13. Tom Hardy plays the title character, another Marvel Comics superhero. Two guesses whether he saves the world. Michelle Williams, Woody Harrelson co-star.
