Vice President Kamala Harris has not invited Vice President-elect JD Vance for a “sit-down” or tour of the official residence for the elected position, according to CBS News, citing Democratic and Republican sources.
While Harris and Vice President-elect Vance have not met, Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff reportedly spoke with Usha Vance, the vice-president-elect’s wife, for about 40 minutes, CBS News reported.
Navy officials who oversee Number One Observatory Circle, the vice president’s residence located at the Naval Observatory, reportedly also gave Vance’s team an overview of the house. The officials discussed its layout and the logistics of the move, as well as helped answer any questions the vice president-elect had, CBS News quoted a person familiar with the conversation as saying.
Sources close to Harris also reportedly told the outlet arrangements are underway to prepare the residence for Vance’s three children. One of Harris’ representatives rejected questions from Usha Vance’s “intermediaries” about how the incoming family would be able to childproof the home, CBS News reported.
People close to Harris defended the decision not to invite Vance to the residence. Harris’ team has been focused on the California wildfires, as well as an overseas trip that was canceled, CBS News said.
After the 2020 election, Harris and then-Vice President Mike Pence never had a “formal sit-down,” CBS News added, citing Democratic and Republican sources. Pence allowed Harris and Emhoff to visit the official residence “quietly” in the last days of the first Trump presidency.
That invitation was discrete since then-President Donald Trump resisted helping Harris and then-President-elect Joe Biden. People close to Harris said she was never allowed to visit, according to CBS News.
The Vance family will reportedly move into the home on Monday, when the vice president-elect is inaugurated. Neither his team nor Harris’s immediately returned a request for comment.
