Tigers: Spencer Torkelson had a pair of hits, walked twice and drove in a run to help the Tigers beat the Cardinals 5-1 on Wednesday in St. Louis for their 15th win in its last 20 games. Brant Hurter allowed one hit in three scoreless innings in his second career start, and Chase Lee (1-0) followed with two scoreless innings to earn his first major league win as the Tigers used six pitchers in a bullpen game. Andre Pallante (4-3) allowed three runs and four hits and four walks in 5 2/3 innings for his first loss at home since Sept. 10, 2024, against the Reds. Willson Contreras had an RBI single to center field off Brenan Hanifee to score Victor Scott II in the sixth and cut the Tigers’ lead to 3-1. In the fourth, Torkelson lined a double to thewarning track that bounced off the glove of Jordan Walker to score Riley Greene and expand the Tigers’ lead to 2-0.

Pirates: Andrew Heaney and four relievers combined on a four-hitter as the Pirates edged the visiting Reds 3-1. Heaney (3-3) allowed a run on three hits with two walks and four strikeouts in five innings of work to win for the first time in nearly a month. Dennis Santana worked a perfect ninth for his fifth save as the Pirates took two of three from the Reds. Henry Davis had two hits for the Pirates, including an RBI-single in the fourth off Brady Singer (5-3). The Pirates won despite failing to score five runs for a 26th straight game, tying an MLB record. ... Pirates RHP pitcher Jared Jones underwent elbow surgery and will not return in 2025. The 23-year-old Jones initially complained of elbow pain in mid-March. The decision to have surgery came after Jones dealt with discomfort during his rehab. The extent of the damage to the elbow wasn’t initially known. The team hasn’t put a firm timetable on a possible return. Jones made the Pirates out of spring training in 2024 and pitched well, going 6-8 with a 4.14 ERA.

Guardians: Gavin Williams pitched six strong innings and José Ramírez had three more hits to extend his hitting streak to 14 games as the Guardians beat the host Twins 5-1. Steven Kwan was 3 for 5 with two doubles and Carlos Santana added his second HR of the day in the eighth as the Guardians snapped a five-game losing streak by earning a split on the day. Earlier, the Twins won the completion of a suspended game 6-5 on Kody Clemens’ walk-off double. Williams (4-2) finished with six strikeouts against two walks and two hits in six innings.

Extra innings: Brett Baty hit a two-run single to break a seventh-inning tie and help the Mets avert a three-game sweep by beating the host Red Sox 5-1. Baty also singled home Mark Vientos in the first to give the Mets a 1-0 lead. Francisco Lindor had a solo HR in the ninth as the Mets won for just the second time in seven games. ... RHP George Kirby is expected to start and make his season debut when the Mariners open a four-game series against the Astros on Thursday night in Houston. Kirby, 27, has been on the IL since March 24 with inflammation in his shoulder. ... C Jonah Heim left the Rangers’ 4-3 road loss to the Yankees in the second due to a right hand injury after making two errant warmup throws. The Rangers said Heim had a compressed nerve in his throwing hand. The 29-year-old is batting .262 with six HRs and 17 RBIs in 37 games. ... Jean Segura, a two-time All-Star who hit .281 in a 12-year career with six teams, retired. The 35-year-old infielder last played in the majors in 2023.
