Rep. Maxwell Frost, D-Fla., responded to Rep. James Comer, R-Ky., denying his request to fly to El Salvador by saying he was taking the trip anyway.

And on Monday, Frost traveled to El Salvador with Reps. Robert Garcia, D-Calif., Yassamin Ansari, D-Ariz., and Maxine Dexter, D-Ore.

Frost last week sent a letter to the House Oversight Committee chaired by Comer to request funding for a trip to El Salvador. The trip would allow him to meet with Kilmar Abrego Garcia, who was deported from the U.S. by the Trump administration.

His request, however, was denied by Comer, who accused Frost of seeking to meet with “foreign gang members.”

“You may be pleased to know that a Democratic Senator, Chris Van Hollen, was photographed just yesterday in EL Salvador enjoying margaritas garnished with cherry slices with the foreign gang member your letter references,” Comer wrote. “If you also wish to meet with him, you can spend your own money.

“But I will not approve a single dime of taxpayer funds for use on the excursion you have requested. Your request is denied.”

Frost said on X he was taking the trip anyway.

“Chair Comer denied our request for an official trip to El Salvador to advocate for due process and the return of Kilmar Abrego Garcia,” he wrote. “Pretty shameful. Good thing I don’t need Comer’s permission to get on a plane.”

Rep. Mark Green, R-Tenn., who chairs the House Homeland Security Committee, said he would also deny any requests to travel to El Salvador.

Garcia, one for the four lawmakers who traveled to El Salvador this week, said the trip was “to remind the American people that kidnapping immigrants and deporting them without due process is not how we do things in America,” according to reports.

Comer reviled the move in a post on X.

“I will never authorize a penny of taxpayer dollars to send Democrats to El Salvador for a photo-op & margaritas,” he wrote.
