New York Gov. Kathy Hochul said Saturday that people in the Empire State who vote for Republican candidates are “anti-American” and “anti-woman.”
Gov. Hochul told Al Sharpton, host of MSNBC’s “PoliticsNation,” that former President Donald Trump’s Oct. 27 rally in New York City allowed her to remind people voting for Republican candidates that they have “trashed” American values.
“It gave me a chance to tie the Republicans running in these seats – the incumbents – closer to Donald Trump and remind everybody if you’re voting for these Republicans in New York, you are voting for someone who supports Donald Trump, and you’re anti-woman, you’re anti-abortion and, basically, you’re anti-American,” she said.
The governor added that those voters have “trashed” what the U.S. is about, a move they will “wear” on Election Day.
Multiple Republican incumbent congress members are running for reelection in New York, some of whom have opposed protections for abortion. While Trump has declined to endorse a national abortion ban, he has fielded criticism for the overturning of Roe v. Wade being supported by nominees of his to the Supreme Court.
A speaker at the former president’s rally also said that Harris has “pimp handlers.” Hochul told Sharpton the event backfired for Trump.
“I was disgusted by, first of all, the lineup of individuals who just spewed such [venomous] hatred about every person you can imagine, whether it’s women, people of color, and now, to single out Puerto Ricans,” she said.
Tony Hinchcliffe, a comedian, told the crowd that Puerto Rico is a “floating island of garbage.” Hochul said Trump should have denounced the remarks.
“By not disavowing this, by not condemning this, which he should have done, and I called him out to do this, he just makes people feel that they’re not worthwhile, that they don’t have value,” Hochul said.
