July 30, 1971: Quarterback Earl Morrall, 37, passes for 329 yards and three touchdowns as the world champion Colts defeat the College All-Stars, 24-17, before an announced 52,289 at Soldier Field in Chicago. Baltimore holds highly touted quarterbacks Jim Plunkett and Dan Pastorini to 78 passing yards.

Aug. 3, 1965: Reggie Jackson’s two-run homer gives Leone’s 16-to-19-year-old baseball team a 2-0 victory over Putty Hill.

Aug. 1, 1959:Turf Valley Country Club opens. The clubhouse is unfinished so the 100 golfers who play the Ellicott City course use two buildings on the Pistorio farm as dressing rooms.

Aug. 2, 1948: Archie Moore, an up-and-coming light-heavyweight boxer from California, scores a unanimous 10-round decision over Ted Lowry of New York at the Coliseum. Moore will win the world title in 1952 and hold it for nearly 10 years.

July 30, 1932: Orioles slugger Buzz Arlett hits his 45th and 46th home runs in a 7-6 win over the International League-leading Newark Bears at Oriole Park. Arlett will finish with 54 homers.
