Road collapse closes
100 block of W. Centre St.
Work crews from the city's Department of Public Works and Baltimore Gas & Electric are seeking the cause of a partial street collapse in the 100 block of W. Centre St. The collapse occurred about 5 a.m. Saturday, public works spokesman Kurt Kocher said, and the street has been closed since. No injuries were reported. Traffic is being sent north through Mount Vernon to avoid the scene. The collapse caused damage to a six-inch water main, Kocher said, as well as to BGE lines and stormwater drains in the area. He said the cause of the collapse is still being investigated and crews suspect there may be hole in a 72-inch sewer line beneath the street. “We will be doing some closed circuit TV of [the] sewer line and develop a plan to stabilize and repair the street and utilities,” Kocher said in an email. The 100 block of Centre St. will remain closed “for the duration,” he said, noting it's “too early to say” when work might be completed. BGE crews have been installing underground duct work along Centre Street, company spokesman Aaron Koos said in an email. Workers had identified existing water leaks and voids under the street, and had been working with city crews to identify the cause.
