Feb. 12, 1991: The Orioles sign first baseman Glenn Davis, acquired in the offseason from the Houston Astros, to a club-record one-year deal worth $3.275 million. Davis, who cost the club three future All-Stars (Steve Finley, Curt Schilling and Pete Harnisch), hits .247 with 24 homers in three injury-marred seasons and never again plays in the major leagues.

Feb. 15, 1982: Hollywood Henderson, a 3-year-old colt named for the flamboyant NFL player, wins the $85,350 Bowie Stakes, his second straight victory at Bowie Race Course.

Feb. 16, 1974: Maryland's men's basketball team scores a 56-54 victory at Clemson as Len Elmore, the Terps' 6-foot-9 center, blocks a shot by 7-1 Wayne "Tree" Rollins with three seconds left. It's Maryland's 17th win in 21 games.

Feb. 14, 1973:The Colts name Howard Schnellenberger, 38, as their coach. Schnellenberger, then-offensive coordinator of the Super Bowl-champion Miami Dolphins, replaces interim coach John Sandusky, who replaced Don McCafferty, who was fired midseason in 1972 by general manager Joe Thomas.

Feb. 13, 1968: Earl Monroe, the Bullets' flashy rookie guard, scores 56 points — a team record — but Baltimore loses the NBA game to the Los Angeles Lakers, 119-116, in overtime at the Civic Center.

Feb. 18, 1954: In one of their worst trades, the Orioles send slugger Roy Sievers to the Washington Senators for light-hitting outfielder Gil Coan. Sievers will become a four-time All-Star and, in 1957, lead the American League with 42 home runs and 114 RBIs; Coan lasts 1 1/2 seasons with Baltimore and hits three home runs.

Feb. 15, 1947: The Baltimore Colts, a new team in the All-America Football Conference, sign Rudolph "Doc" Mobley of Hardin-Simmons, the NCAA's leading rusher in 1942 (1,281 yards) and 1946 (1,262). Mobley, who weighs 160 pounds, plays one year here, rushes for 90 yards and quits the game.

Feb. 12, 1928: Virginia holds Maryland's men's basketball team to two field goals, both in the second half, in defeating the Old Liners, 34-12 in Charlottesville.

Birthday

Feb. 16, 1931:Dick Modzelewski, All-America defensive tackle at Maryland who helped the Terps defeat No. 1 Tennessee in the January 1952 Sugar Bowl. He then played 14 years in the NFL.
