The Orioles recalled pitching prospect Brandon Young from Triple-A Norfolk and placed reliever Cody Poteet on the 15-day injured list with right shoulder inflammation ahead of their three-game series with the Washington Nationals. Poteet’s IL placement was retroactive to Monday, making him ineligible to return until May 6.
Young, 26, made his MLB debut for Baltimore on Saturday, allowing three runs on seven hits and three walks with three strikeouts in four innings against the Cincinnati Reds. The 2020 undrafted free agent out of Louisiana-Lafayette has been one of the Orioles’ most productive pitchers at Triple-A over the past two seasons with a 3.33 ERA in 23 games (21 starts).
“I thought he was solid,” Orioles manager Brandon Hyde said after his debut. “I thought they were aggressive on him with strikes. I think he had a tough time slowing them down, speeding him up, but I thought the stuff was OK. The stuff was good. First start in the big leagues, that’s never easy. I thought he controlled his emotions well. I thought the stuff was what we saw in spring training. Just had a tough time keeping guys off-balance.”
Baltimore optioned him back to Norfolk to bring up Poteet as an extra bullpen arm for Sunday’s series finale, but the right-hander struggled mightily in the club’s 24-2 drubbing at the hands of Cincinnati. By placing Poteet, 30, on the IL, the Orioles could waive the 15-day waiting period between call-ups for Young.
He rejoins an Orioles rotation that has been devastated by injuries (seven starters on the IL) and ineffectiveness (MLB-worst 6.11 ERA). Dean Kremer, Tomoyuki Sugano and Cade Povich are scheduled to start their three games in Washington this week, but the club has yet to announce its pitching plans for this weekend’s series against the Tigers in Detroit.
Young, Charlie Morton and Kyle Gibson, who has been building up in the minor leagues, would all be rested enough to be available for the series opener on Friday. Hyde originally said Gibson’s target date for joining the rotation was “around May 1” but he threw 78 pitches and went five innings with High-A Aberdeen in his latest start Saturday.
