Suspect in custody after incident closes S. Balto. roads
A suspect was taken into custody after a six-hour barricade situation Sunday morning in South Baltimore, police said.
At 3:45 a.m., Southern District police officers went to a residence in the 1600 block of Whetstone Way, in the Locust Point industrial area, for a report of a person inside who was possibly armed, said Detective Jeremy Silbert, police spokesman.
Members of the department's SWAT team and hostage negotiators were called to the scene out of an abundance of caution, Silbert said.
During the standoff, the nearby McHenry Row shopping center, a portion of Interstate 95 and the Fort McHenry National Monument were closed, according to police.
At 9:45 a.m., the suspect came outside without incident after speaking with hostage negotiators, Silbert said. No shots were fired and there were no reported injuries, he said.
No one else was in the residence, Silbert said.
The suspect “may have had a mental health crisis,” according to police spokeswoman Nicole Monroe. The suspect was taken to a hospital for a psychiatric assessment. She declined to release his name.
The shopping center, which includes a Harris Teeter supermarket, Merritt Athletic Club and other businesses, reopened around 10 a.m., along with the I-95 exit to Key Highway. The Fort McHenry monument reopened to the public at 10:30 a.m.
