Ryder Logistics Inc., a transportation company, will lay off 87 workers at a facility in Curtis Bay, according to a notice posted to the Maryland Department of Labor website.

The notice, a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification, often known as a WARN, is part of a federal law requiring employers with 100 or more employees to provide at least 60 days advance written notice of a plant closing and mass layoff affecting 50 or more, according to the U.S. Department of Labor. The notice was published Dec. 30, and the layoffs are scheduled to happen Feb. 28.

Northrop Grumman, an aerospace and defense company, “has decided to insource operations at its Curtis Bay facility,” according to a spokesperson for Ryder Logistics. The Ryder Logistics building is on Energy Parkway off Fort Smallwood Road. What Ryder Logistics was doing for Northrop Grumman is unclear. A spokesperson declined to describe what type of work was performed at the facility. Ryder Logistics also operates a truck rental business in Jessup.

“We are transitioning our Baltimore facility logistics work from an external vendor to a Northrop Grumman team,” a spokesperson for Northrop Grumman said in an email statement Tuesday. “Our priority throughout this transition is maintaining uninterrupted manufacturing and delivering measurable benefits to our customers.”
