The WNBA and Aces have filed motions to dismiss former Aces player Dearica Hamby’s federal lawsuit that alleges mistreatment over her pregnancy.
Hamby filed the suit about a month ago, alleging the Aces discriminated and retaliated against her, resulting in her January 2023 trade to the Sparks.
The league argued Hamby doesn’t have standing to sue the WNBA because it doesn’t employ her. The motions to dismiss were filed Wednesday.
The WNBA also disputed her claim that the league didn’t properly investigate her allegations. The league in May 2023 suspended Aces coach Becky Hammon for two games and docked the team its first-round 2025 draft pick for providing impermissible player benefits involving Hamby.
The two-time defending league champions argued in the motion that Hamby failed to provide evidence of retaliation or discrimination.
The 30-year-old Hamby, an All-Star for the third time in four seasons, is averaging career highs of 16.9 points and 9.2 rebounds this season.
College football: West Virginia State LB Jyilek Zyiare Harrington, 21, was fatally shot during what the university says is being investigated by Charleston police as a home invasion. Harrington’s body was found inside an apartment Wednesday night.
Golf: Jon Rahm appealed the European tour sanctions against him for playing Saudi-backed LIV Golf events, meaning the two-time major champion from Spain is clear to play European tour events until an independent panel decides whether he must pay fines to be a member. Rahm, 29, is required to play three European tour events to be eligible for the Ryder Cup next year.
NHL: Devils defenseman Luke Hughes will be out six to eight weeks because of a shoulder injury he suffered earlier this month. That means Hughes, 21, could miss the team’s early regular-season games.
Soccer: The French league’s legal commission ordered Paris Saint-Germain to pay Kylian Mbappé the 55 million euros ($61 million) in unpaid wages that he claims he’s entitled to. The order came a day after the France superstar rejected a mediation offer by the commission in his dispute with his former club. Mbappé joined defending Spanish champ Real Madrid this summer on a free transfer. PSG doesn’t intend to pay and announced that it will take further legal action. The club has argued that it doesn’t owe money to the 25-year-old World Cup winner under an agreement when Mbappé was sidelined ahead of the 2023-24 season — following his decision not to prolong his contract with the club — with the player allegedly stipulating that he would relinquish bonuses over his reintegration into the team.
