If Dr. Joyce Jones, 45, had been in her 20s during the disco era — instead of in grammar school — would she have worn something like what she wore to the disco-themed Stoop Soiree?

“I don’t know that even 10 years ago I would’ve bought that jumpsuit. I don’t know if I would have bought something sparkly,” said the Federal Hill resident.

Jones admitted she wasn’t that brave with her fashion when she was younger.

“I am one of these people who really admire [other] people who are super fashionable. My nose was pressed up against the window a bit. I’m kind of shy. I didn’t tend to like people to be looking at me,” she said.

However, Jones said that attitude has been changing.

“As I’m getting older, I’m not feeling [so shy] anymore. It’s fun,” she said.

At work as an internist specializing in HIV medicine at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, Jones said she eschews the white lab coat because she feels it can make her patients uncomfortable and goes with a style that’s “kind of preppy.”

It’s after work when Jones said she has started stepping out of her old comfort zone, as she did with the out-of-sight outfit she wore to the Downtown Baltimore Family Alliance fundraiser.
