LGBT lifestyle magazine Out has named DeRay Mckesson among its “Power 50” this year, choosing the Baltimore activist as one of the most influential people in American LGBT culture today.
Mckesson was No. 13 on the list, with the magazine highlighting the Black Lives Matter activist’s “admirable yet unsuccessful” bid for Baltimore mayor; his protesting of the death of Alton Sterling in Baton Rouge, La., which led to his arrest; and his project “Pod Save the People,” a podcast in which Mckesson interviews notables about culture, politics and social justice.
TV political commentator and author Rachel Maddow came in first place, with journalist Anderson Cooper at No. 2.
