Men
Terps hand Mids setback
Dubick, Wisnauskas lead way as UM beats Navy
for 10th straight season
Louis Dubick was constantly moving in front of the net, finding open spaces.
Logan Wisnauskas kept his head up at all times and delivered some pinpoint passes.
The two attackmen led the way as Maryland picked apart the Navy defense during the annual men’s lacrosse showdown between the schools.
Dubick did all his damage from the crease in scoring a career-high five goals as the third-ranked Terrapins soundly defeated the Midshipmen, 14-9, in front of 2,151 rain-soaked fans at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium on Saturday.
“Lou’s instincts as a cutter are great and he has awesome hands. He is pretty much two-handed so he can cut lefty, cut righty,” Maryland head coach John Tillman said. “I think the guys look for Lou and know if they throw him the ball something good is going to happen. Instinctively, Lou just knows where to go and what to do in those situations.”
Wisnauskas (Boys’ Latin) had a career-best five assists as Maryland beat Navy for the 10th straight season. That is one shy of the longest winning streak in series history as the Terps won 11 in a row versus the Mids from 1993 to 2003.
Wisnauskas scored three goals in also reaching a career-high with eight points. Jared Bernhardt contributed three goals and an assist as Maryland’s starting attack accounted for 17 points.
“Obviously, our attack did a lot of work today and I’m happy for that. Those guys have good chemistry and they’re all really skilled, very unselfish,” Tillman said. “Lou is a great cutter, Logan is a great shooter and feeder and Jared is a good feeder as well. This is a very unselfish group and they love sharing the ball. I think the guys know that if you keep moving and cutting that people will look for you.”
Navy began the game playing man-to-man defense, but switched to a zone early in the second quarter after watching Maryland players repeatedly get loose for open looks. The Midshipmen did not cover the ball behind the goal while in the zone and that gave Bernardt and others time to find cutters inside.
“Just the way they were playing defense — you would dodge the wing and they don’t go behind with you,” Tillman explained. “So a lot of times we would throw it behind and look to attack the inside. We threw it back there then would probe and probe.”
Midfielder Bubba Fairman contributed a goal and two assists for Maryland, which is off to a 5-0 start for the fourth time since 2013. Sophomore faceoff specialist Justin Shockey was the catalyst as the Terrapins captured 18 of 26 draws.
“I think a guy that really changed the tide was Justin Shockey,” Tillman said. “Justin did an awesome job of getting us possessions and allowed our offense to get into a flow.”
Senior midfielder Greyson Torain scored two goals and assisted two others to lead Navy (2-1), which has not beaten Maryland since 2009. Freshman attackman Nick Cole had three goals and an assist for the Midshipmen, who still have not started a season 3-0 since 2007.
“At the end of the day, we just played too much defense, which sooner or later is going to catch up with you,” Navy head coach Rick Sowell said. “When you play a lot of defense, mental and physical fatigue sets in and I think that’s what happened today.”
Sophomore attackman Christian Daniel also notched a hat trick for Navy, which was beaten 38-19 on ground balls in addition to winning just eight faceoffs.
“They were just out-hustling us to the ground balls. We’re a team that prides itself on getting ground balls so to get beat 38-19 is disappointing,” said Torain, who led Navy in that department with five.
