Pirates: The Pirates are shutting down rookie right-hander Jared Jones for at least two weeks while he deals with a right lat strain. The team placed the 22-year-old Jones on the 15-day injured list on Thursday after he exited his start against the Cardinals after five innings a day earlier with discomfort in his right side. The Pirates manager Derek Shelton said Friday that Jones has a grade 2 strain and will be re-evaluated after his two-week break. Jones was already expected to be out until after the All-Star break. The team gave no timetable for his return. The Pirates have attempted to play it safe with Jones, who is 5-6 with a 3.56 ERA in 16 starts. They let him skip a turn in the rotation during a trip through Cincinnati and Atlanta. He pitched one simulated game during that downtime. Shelton doesn’t believe the break had anything to do with the injury but is unsure if it can be connected to Jones’ overall workload. Jones has thrown 91 innings this season and was on pace to blow past his totals in the minor leagues, where he threw 122 2/3 innings in 2022 and 126 1/3 innings last year. “To say that this happened because of certain usage, I don’t think we can say that,” Shelton said. “I don’t think we cannot say that. If we had it figured out, that this is the perfect scenario to use every single guy, then we would do that and there would not be pitching injuries.”

Angels: The Angels placed third baseman Luis Rengifo on the 10-day injured list on Friday because of inflammation in his right wrist. Rengifo exited Wednesday’s game at Oakland after fouling a ball off his lower right arm near the wrist. He had an MRI on Friday. Rengifo ranked fifth in the majors with a .315 batting average and was tied for third in the American League with 22 steals.

Braves: The Braves continued to plug holes in their outfield by signing Eddie Rosario to a minor league deal and calling up Eli White from Triple-A Gwinnett to start in left field in Friday night’s game against the Phillies. Rosario was designated for assignment by the Nationals on Monday and was released Wednesday. Rosario hit .183 with seven homers with Washington this season and will hope for better production in his reunion with the Braves organization. Rosario was expected to report to Triple-A Gwinnett on Friday.

Cubs: Justin Steele pitched a two-hitter for his first career complete game, Seiya Suzuki homered and the Cubs beat the Angels 5-1 on Friday. Steele (1-3) dazzled in his first victory in 13 starts this season. The left-hander threw 95 pitches, striking out seven and walking two, while lowering his ERA from 3.20 to 2.95. Th second straight after losing eight of 10.

Red Sox: Red Sox right-hander Chris Martin was placed on the 15-day injured list Friday because of right elbow inflammation, and left-hander Cam Booser was recalled from Triple-A.
