PSG forward Neymar was forced off the field on a stretcher Sunday after twisting his right ankle in a hard-fought 4-3 win against visitor Lille in the French league. Neymar picked up the injury at the start of the second half after the Brazil forward scored PSG’s second goal before the interval. PSG led 2-1 when Neymar was injured following contact with Lille’s Benjamin Andre. PSG has been struggling since the start of the year, with stars Neymar and Lionel Messi underperforming. Neymar has been on the end of sharp criticism for a perceived lack of commitment after French media reported that he attended a poker tournament and dined at a fast-food restaurant a day after PSG lost to Bayern Munich in the Champions League last 16. Neymar, who damaged the same ankle at the World Cup, gave PSG a 2-0 lead at the end of a fast-developing collective move he also started. It’s unclear whether Neymar will be able to play next Sunday against Marseille in French soccer’s biggest match. “He sprained his right ankle. He is undergoing tests to know the extent,” PSG coach Christophe Galtier said.
Top-seeded Carlos Alcaraz won his first title since his milestone U.S. Open triumph by beating Cameron Norrie in straight sets at the Argentina Open on Sunday in Buenos Aires. The world No. 2 overcame No. 12 Norrie 6-3, 7-5 in the clay-court final. “I felt very comfortable,” Alcaraz said. “This is the level that I have to play in a final. It is really special, I struggled in these four months.” A right leg injury sidelined Alcaraz from the Australian Open, with Novak Djokovic reclaiming the No. 1 ranking from Alcaraz after the Serb won his 10th title in Melbourne. The 19-year-old Alcaraz dropped only one set — to Serbia’s Laslo Djere — in his first tournament of the year. After winning the first set in 36 minutes, Alcaraz quickly broke second-seeded Norrie in the second set but the Brit hit back when the Spaniard was serving for the championship at 5-4. Alcaraz broke Norrie with a drop shot to win the title. Norrie lost his second final of the year after Auckland in January. Alcaraz next defends his title at the Rio Open.
Guardians manager Terry Francona is feeling much better these days. He has a rod in his left foot that bothers him when he wears his beloved flip-flops, but that’s a breeze compared with what he experienced in the past. The former big league infielder dealt with gastrointestinal problems and blood-clotting issues in 2020. Following surgeries on his hip and toe, he also had to step away from the team in 2021. But his outlook has stayed the same throughout. “Everybody says, ‘Do you have perspective?’ ” Francona said Sunday as he continued preparations for his 11th season with the Guardians. “I hate when we lose. I really enjoy when we win. But I love doing what we do, but I always have. I’ve always enjoyed it. If I wasn’t in baseball, all I’d be doing was wishing I was in baseball.” Francona, 63, is thankful that he isn’t limping as much as before, making it easier for him to do his job. And it doesn’t look as if he has lost anything on that front. The two-time World Series winner with the Red Sox directed a young group of Guardians to the AL Central title in 2022. —Associated Press
