Shortly after Kansas was announced as the No. 1 team in the 68-team field as well as the No. 1 seed in the South region, the Terps were revealed as the No. 5 seed in the South.

Maryland (25-8), voted the No. 3 team in the nation entering the season, will play No. 12 seed South Dakota State (26-7) on Friday in Spokane, Wash., in the first round.

If the Terps advance, they would face No. 4 seed California or No. 13 seed Hawaii on Sunday.

The Spokane Veterans Memorial Arena should bring back unpleasant memories for Maryland fans. It was where, in 2010, Michigan State's Korie Lucious hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer to spoil a Greivis Vasquez-led comeback and give the Spartans an 85-83 victory.
