Stanley M. Malm, a retired Annapolis police officer who studied and lectured widely on the Holocaust, died Sunday of brain cancer at his Glen Burnie home. He was 59.

The son of Richard Malm, a civil engineer, and Barbara Deatherage Malm, an office worker, Stanley Musial Malm was born in Sheffield, Ala., and was raised in Omaha, Neb., Vienna, Va., and Huntsville, Ala., before his family moved to Arnold.

He earned a bachelor's degree in management studies in 1993 from the University of Maryland, College Park, and a master's degree in applied behavioral science from the Johns Hopkins University in 1996. He also held a certificate in education from Hopkins and a certificate from the School of Police and Staff Command.

Mr. Malm joined the Annapolis Police Department in 1980 and during his 25-year career served as a patrol officer, marine officer, accident reconstruction officer, hostage negotiator and a traffic officer.

He also supervised special operations, uniform patrol, internal investigations, criminal intelligence and staff inspections units. At his retirement in 2004, he had attained the rank of captain and was chief of detectives.

Mr. Malm was also a faculty member at Johns Hopkins in its Division of Public Safety Leadership in Columbia. Since 2001, he had been a lecturer at the University of Maryland's department of criminology and criminal justice.

He developed and taught courses for the Maryland Police Corps, Maryland Police Training Commission, the U.S. Department of State and the Secret Service.

An interest in studying and researching the Holocaust led to a docent position at the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington. He also was selected to participate in the Holocaust and Jewish Resistance Teachers Program in Warsaw, Poland, and Jerusalem.

A soccer player, he coached for Severna Park High School and River Hill High School for 14 years.

He enjoyed camping, winemaking and visiting wineries. He was a Baltimore Ravens and Nebraska Cornhuskers fan.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Barranco & Sons Funeral Home, 495 Ritchie Highway, Severna Park.

In addition to his father, a resident of Millersville, he is survived by his wife of four years, the former Natalie Hannon; a son, Stephen Malm of Baltimore; a daughter, Stephanie Olienyk of Millersville; a stepson, Garrett Hannon of Glen Burnie; a stepdaughter, Sara Hannon of Glen Burnie; a sister, Nancy Tipton of Eldersburg; and a grandson.
