A man died and a woman was hospitalized after a shooting Friday night outside Dr. Henry A. Wise Jr. High School in Upper Marlboro following a vigil for NFL rookie Khyree Jackson and two others who died in a car crash last weekend, police said.
After being found with gunshot wounds around 10 p.m., the man and woman were taken to the hospital where the man was pronounced dead, said Prince George’s County Police. The woman’s injuries are not life-threatening, police added.
Officers were on duty outside the facility during the ceremony and started to leave once the vigil ended, said Captain Sukhjit Batth in a Facebook live video from the scene.
Soon after, officers heard gunshots and drove back to the school. Batth said people in the area were performing life-saving measures on the woman. They flagged down the officers when they arrived and police then found a man who had been shot as well, Batth said. Officers and citizens also tried to perform life-saving measures on the man. They were both taken to the hospital where the man was declared dead.
A gun was recovered on the scene, police added.
The department is now investigating what led to the shooting, Batth said.
At around 3:14 a.m. last Saturday morning, troopers responded to a crash in Upper Marlboro. Upon investigation, police learned that Cori Clingman, 23, from Upper Marlboro, driving a silver Infiniti Q50 was heading north on Route 4/Pennsylvania Avenue when she tried to switch lanes at a high speed and hit a maroon Dodge Charger and silver Chevrolet Impala. Police believe alcohol was a factor.
Jackson, 24, from Waldorf, and Isaiah Hazel, 23, from Upper Marlboro were pronounced dead at the scene of the crash. Anthony Lytton, Jr., 24, from Upper Marlboro was pronounced dead at the University of Maryland Capital Region Medical Center.
The men were remembered during a vigil at the high school earlier Friday night, according to a Tweet from Wise Athletics.
Jackson was selected by the Minnesota Vikings in the fourth round of the 2024 NFL draft after playing cornerback at Alabama for two seasons and ending his college career at Oregon.
