A person who investigators say escaped from a Baltimore facility has been caught, according to the U.S. Marshals Service.

Less than one week after appearing on “Maryland’s Most Wanted” investigators say Hakeem Burroughs, 33, was taken into custody.

Following the segment, agents received information Burroughs was living in Washington, D.C., according to the U.S. Marshals Service.

Deputy Marshal Al Maresca says Burroughs surrendered after agents surrounded the home, and was then taken into custody.

“We developed information that he was actually residing in D.C.,” said Maresca. “We tracked him for a little while before tracking him to a specific location. We were able to make contact with Burroughs through a family member. To his credit rather than draw more negative attention to him he realized law enforcement was on to him and he decided to come outside and surrender.”

On Dec. 12, 2023, investigators say Burroughs disappeared from Volunteers of America, a re-entry facility in Baltimore. The facility aims to help inmates transition back into society. Investigators say Burroughs had been transferred to Volunteers of America to serve out the remainder of his sentence for manslaughter.

Back in 2016 investigators say Burroughs and another man got into an argument in Washington, D.C. When the victim turned his back, investigators say Burroughs pulled out a gun and opened fire.

“Eventually that verbal altercation turned violent. Burroughs pulled out a firearm and shot him in the back three times,” said Al Maresca, Deputy Marshal with the U.S. Marshals Service.

The victim was pronounced dead at an area hospital.

Burroughs was later sentenced to eight years in prison, followed by several years of probation for the crime. The judge weighed the offense and Burroughs’ criminal record, which dates back more than 15 years. Investigators say Burroughs has a number of arrests for robbery, assault, theft and, in 2013, was convicted of a sex crime involving a minor. Burroughs remains in custody.
