Kerry Blackshear Jr. scored on a putback with 5.8 seconds left in overtime Saturday and Virginia Tech spoiled Virginia’s opportunity to climb to No. 1 with a 61-60 victory in Charlottesville, Va.

Blackshear rebounded a missed layup by Justin Robinson and banked it in as he was being fouled. He missed the free throw, but Ty Jerome’s 28-foot attempt at the other end missed badly and the Hokies (18-7, 7-5 Atlantic Coast Conference) had a huge victory.

Robinson led Virginia Tech with 20 points.

Devon Hall had 16 points for Virginia (23-2, 12-1), but the 93.3 percent free throw shooter missed twice from the line in the final 31 seconds.

MSU tops Purdue: Miles Bridges made a tiebreaking 3-pointer with 2.7 seconds left and finished with 20 points to help No.?4 Michigan State top No. 3 Purdue 68-65 in East Lansing, Mich. The Spartans (24-3, 12-2 Big Ten) have won eight straight. The Boilermakers (23-4, 12-2) have lost two straight after winning a school-record 19 games in a row.

Villanova downs Butler: Donte DiVincenzo scored a career-high 30 points, Jalen Brunson had 27 and No. 1 Villanova (23-2, 10-2 Big East) bounced back from its second loss of the season, rallying past Butler 86-75 in Philadelphia. Butler fell to 17-9, 7-6.

Baylor whips Kansas: Manu Lecomte scored eight straight points for Baylor after Big 12 co-leader Kansas had pulled within a basket, and the senior guard finished with 18 overall in the Bears’ 80-64 upset of the No. 10 Jayhawks (19-6, 8-4) in Waco, Texas. Baylor improved to 15-10, 5-7.

Iowa St. jars Oklahoma: Iowa State freshman Lindell Wigginton scored 26 points to help the Cyclones (13-11, 4-8 Big 12) upset the No. 17 Sooners 88-80 in Ames, Iowa. It was the sixth straight road loss for Oklahoma (16-8, 6-6).

Tide crush Vols: Donta Hall had 17 points and 11 rebounds and Collin Sexton scored 16 to lead Alabama (16-10, 7-5 SEC) to a 78-50 thrashing of No. 15 Tennessee (18-6, 8-4) in Tuscaloosa, Ala. News services
