Fifty-five percent of the 1,000 adults surveyed in a new Gallup poll said President-elect Donald Trump will “keep the nation out of war,” according to a news release by the company.
Gallup noted that 41% do not think Trump will, while 4% gave no opinion on the issue during the survey, which was conducted between Dec. 2 and 18.
Trump has pledged to end the war between Russia and Ukraine on the first day of his presidency, as well as to help create peace in the Middle East, where Israel has been at war with Hamas terrorists since October 2023.
Just 38% of the participants of a November 2016 Gallup poll said Trump would “keep the nation out of war,” according to the company.
In that 2016 survey, 59% of respondents also believed he would “control illegal immigration.” Last month’s poll results show that percentage increased by nine points.
The president-elect announced in September he would launch the largest deportation program in American history, a plan he has reinforced in the last couple of months. Trump’s first presidency involved efforts to combat illegal immigration, which included the separation of families at the U.S. southern border.
Trump has repeatedly said terrorists are entering the U.S. through that border, often attributing crime committed by illegal migrants to policies of the Biden administration.
The administration includes Vice President Kamala Harris, his former election opponent.
Sixty percent of the December Gallup poll participants said Trump would keep the U.S. safe from terrorism, the company said. Gallup’s data shows that figure was three percentage points smaller in the 2016 survey.
Some Americans cited national security concerns as a reason why they voted for Trump in November.
