Devin Scales had already driven in two runs to push the South Carroll softball team ahead of No. 15 Century in the fourth inning, but she continued to make her presence known.

The Cavaliers’ senior catcher hit a home run in the sixth to add to South Carroll’s lead in a 6-3 victory over the Knights on Monday in Eldersburg.

“Devin’s been struggling over the last few weeks. She started off hot, then struggled,” Cavaliers coach Matt Cannistraci said. “Basically, what we got her to do was shorten up her stroke and be confident in herself and her confidence is coming along. The more she hits the ball hard, the more confidence she has, and today I think she had a lot of confidence.”

Entering that fourth inning, the Cavs needed a confidence booster. The Knights went up 2-0 in the second when Gina Martin hit a two-run triple that drove in Caitlin Pfarr and Olivia Carmack.

South Carroll (6-2) didn’t have any outs when Scales stepped up to the plate in the fourth inning, and her two-run double gave the Cavaliers the 3-2 edge.

Scales’ homer in the sixth put South Carroll up 4-2 and she added two more RBIs with another double in the seventh to give the Cavaliers a 6-2 lead. In the bottom of the seventh, the Knights had two outs before Chichi Ahulamibe went to bat. She walked, senior Abby Cleckner was hit by a pitch and Brianna Kessler hit an RBI single that trimmed the deficit to 6-3.

Allyson Windell struck out five batters for the Knights (6-2). Cavaliers junior pitcher Chloe Sharman had six strikeouts.

North East 4, No. 4 Bel Air 1: Jessica Choplinsky was 3-for-4 with a single, double and two-run triple to lead the Indians (5-2, 2-1 Upper Chesapeake Bay Athletic Conference Chesapeake Division) over the Bobcats (5-2, 3-2).

Kat Perea was 2-for-3 with a triple and an RBI single for Bel Air.

Bohemia Manor 5, No. 8 C. Milton Wright 1: Taylor Abshagen allowed just two hits over the first four innings and Maddie Penta allowed one walk and one hit in relief to help the Eagles (6-0, 5-0 UCBAC Chesapeake) beat the Mustangs (3-4, 0-4).

Cassidy Cochran had an RBI single for C. Milton Wright, which lost its fourth straight game for the first time since 2008.

Archbishop Spalding 9, Mount de Sales 5: Angela Sena had a double and two RBIs to lift the Cavaliers (5-4, 3-1 IAAM A Conference) over the Sailors (3-5, 2-2).

Westminster 7, Liberty 0: Senior right-hander Justin Cotter allowed three hits and struck out 10 to lead the Owls (6-2) to victory over the host Lions. Liberty (3-5) hit just four balls out of the infield.

“It was his best performance of the season,” Westminster coach Mark Winebrunner said. “He was commanding his fastball and change-up and staying low in the zone. When he does that, he is hard to hit.”

Senior designated hitter Dylan Lane had a home run, single, walk and three RBIs for an Owls team that finished with 12 hits.
