The NHL salary cap is going up significantly next season, with even bigger increases set for the coming years.
The league and the Players’ Association on Friday released cap numbers for the next three seasons: $95.5 million in 2025-26, $104 million in ’26-27 and $113.5 million in ’27-28. The current cap is $88 million, and each leap is the biggest since it was implemented in 2005 at $39 million.
Revenue reaching new record highs thanks to U.S. media rights deals, jersey and board advertisements and other sources are the reasons for the increases.
College: More than a dozen objections have been filed against the $2.8 billion settlement of antitrust allegations against the NCAA and the nation’s biggest conferences — concerns ranging from roster limits and Title IX to what some call an unfair salary cap — but attorneys say they don’t see any threats to pushing the industry-changing lawsuit through this year.
Golf: A Lim Kim shot 69 on Friday for a three-shot lead over Linn Grant at the Hilton Grand Vacations Tournament of Champions, the LGPA Tour season opener. ... Sepp Straka shot another 65 to build a three-shot lead in the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am.
MLB: Max Scherzer is joining the Blue Jays, agreeing to a $15.5 million, one-year contract. The 40-year-old was limited to nine starts with the Rangers last year, going 2-4 with a 3.95 ERA.
NBA: Terry Rozier declined to answer questions Friday about the investigations by federal prosecutors into unusual betting patterns surrounding his play in a 2023 game with the Hornets.
Soccer: It will be Real Madrid vs. Manchester City yet again in the Champions League — but never as early as this, and for the first time with a Kylian Mbappé vs. Erling Haaland matchup. The two heavyweights were the standout pairing Friday in the draw for the new knockout playoffs round.
