SKAMANIA COUNTY, Wash. — The Skamania County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a human skull found in the Gifford Pinchot National Forest.

On Sept. 4, a bear hunter contacted the Skamania County Communications Center and reported they found what was believed to be a human skull near the Sawtooth Berry Fields.

“A Skamania County Detective responded to the area, where coordinates were provided, and successfully recovered the skull. The skull was determined to be of human origin,” the Skamania County Sheriff’s Office said.

Officials say the identity of the remains is not known and the case is under investigation. “The skull will be sent for forensic analysis in an attempt to make positive identification,” the sheriff’s office said.

According to the sheriff’s department, there are no indications of a public safety risk based on the circumstances of the discovery.

This is the second human skull located in the Gifford Pinchot National Forest in just over a month.
