A man is dead, two others were shot and a woman also was injured after gunfire that Carroll County authorities said followed a “road rage incident” on Independence Day in Taneytown.

The Carroll County Sheriff’s Office said the shooting followed a physical altercation stemming from a road rage encounter on Route 140 between a pickup truck and a sedan that followed each other to the intersection of Bear Run and Runnymede roads.

Once there, the occupants got out and began fighting, and a third vehicle, a Jeep, arrived, the sheriff’s office said.

During that fight, a handgun was discharged multiple times, striking the three people.

Officers responded at about 10 p.m. Thursday to the intersection for the report of a shooting and discovered multiple gunshot victims, the sheriff’s office said in a news release.

One of them, a 36-year-old man from Westminster, was pronounced dead. Two other men, whose ages were not released but are adults, were wounded by gunfire and taken to hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries. A 33-year-old woman was hospitalized with injuries from the fight, but was not shot, the sheriff’s office said.

None of the injured people’s identities were immediately available. Other vehicle passengers, including an 18-month-old who was hospitalized as a precaution, were not injured.

No charges had been filed Friday afternoon as Carroll County Sheriff’s Office detectives worked to determine each person’s role in the altercation between the motorists.

There is no threat to the public, according to the sheriff’s office.
