For the fourth time in five seasons, the Loyola Maryland-Virginia men’s lacrosse game was decided by one goal as the No. 15 Cavaliers rallied past the No. 10 Greyhounds, 13-12, in double overtime Saturday in a season-opener at Klöckner Stadium.

Dox Aitken picked up the ground ball off the faceoff to open the second overtime, raced into the box and split a Loyola slide, scoring 15 seconds into the period to give host Virginia the win.

Loyola had rallied from a 12-9 deficit to tie with 2:14 left in regulation. Jay Drapeau caught a pass from Aidan Olmstead and evened the score at 12-12.

The Greyhounds were led by Pat Spencer (Boys’ Latin), John Duffy and Olmstead each with three goals. Ian Laviano had a game-high five goals for the Cavaliers.

Delaware 16, Mt. St. Mary’s 12: The host Blue Hens (1-0) finished strong on a 5-2 run to beat the Mount (0-1). Brenden McCarthy, Stephano Mastro and Luke Frankeny had two goals each for Mount St. Mary’s.

Salisbury 13, Lynchburg 9: Garrett Reynolds (Archbishop Curley) scored a career-high and game-high six goals to lead the host Sea Gulls (2-0) past the Hornets (0-1). Anthony Stavrakis made nine saves on 18 shots for Salisbury.

State women

No. 20 Towson 14, No. 4 Penn State 13:The host Tigers (1-0) built an 11-5 first-half lead and held off the Nittany Lions (0-1). The win was the first in program history over Penn State.

Natalie Sulmonte had three goals and three assists for Towson. Madison Carter (South River) had a six goals for the Nittany Lions.

No. 10 Navy 9, Ohio State 7:Jenna Collins (River Hill) had four goals and an assist to lead the host Mids (1-0) past the Buckeyes (0-1). Ingrid Boyum made 10 saves for Navy. Kayla Harris (Broadneck) led the 11-7 draw control for the Mids.

No. 9 North Carolina 15, Furman 14, OT: Justin Anderson assisted on the game-tying goal and scored the game-winner as the host Tar Heels (2-0) won a come-from-behind victory over the Paladins (0-2). Anderson assisted Chris Cloutier with 1:16 left in regulation and scored the game-winner with 3:49 left in overtime.

No. 1 Duke 19, Jacksonville 8: Justin Guterding had four goals and the host Blue Devils (3-0) opened with a 5-0 run over the Dolphins (1-1).

No. 4 Denver 11, Air Force 5: Defensemen Dylan Gaines (Boys’ Latin) scored the game’s first goal, caused two turnovers and picked up six ground balls to help the Pioneers (1-0) past the host Falcons (0-1).

No. 7 Ohio State 15, No. 20 Boston U. 9:Matthew Smidt made a career-high 15 saves for the host Buckeyes (2-0). The Terriers fell to 1-1.

No. 8 Rutgers 12. St. John’s 8: Jules Heningburg had four goals to lead the host Scarlet Knights (2-0) past the Red Storm (0-1).

No. 11 Syracuse 21, Binghamton 4: The host Orange (1-0) opened with a 13-0 run and beat the Bearcats (0-1). Brendan Bomberry had a game-high five goals for Syracuse.

No. 12 Penn State 15, Hobart 8: The host Nittany Lions (1-1) outscored the Statesmen (0-1), 9-1, in the second half. Mac O’Keefe had five goals for Penn State.

No. 16 Army West Point 18, Massachusetts 6: David Symmes had three goals and an assist to lead the host Black Knights (1-0) past the Minutemen (0-1).

No. 17 James Madison 15, No. 3 North Carolina 14, 2OT: Kristen Gaudian scored the game-tying and game-winning goals to lift the host Dukes (1-0) over the Tar Heels (0-1).

Gaudien and Elena Romesburg each scored five goals for James Madison, which ended a five-game winning streak in the series and marked the first win by JMU over the Tar Heels since Feb. 29, 2000.

No. 6 Boston C. 13, No. 15 Notre Dame 11: Kaileen Hart had four goals to lead the visiting Eagles (1-0, 1-0 ACC) past the Fighting Irish (0-1, 0-1).

No. 8 Southern Cal 11, Virginia Tech 5: Izzy McMahon had a hat trick to lead the visiting Trojans (1-0) past the Hokies (0-1).

No. 9 Northwestern 18, Canisius 7: The host Wildcats (1-0) took a 10-4 lead over the Golden Griffins (0-1) in the first half. Danita Stroup had a hat trick for Northwestern.
