The early-season basketball upsets in the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference continued when host Gilman got a balanced effort with fine shooting to upset No. 3 John Carroll, 71-64, Wednesday night.

Jalen Rucker (17 points), Brandon Madison (16), Donald Duncan (12) and Ciaran Sandy (11) reached double figures as the Greyhounds (4-1, 1-1) hit 10 3-pointers and made 21 of 25 free throws.

The Patriots, who are without last season's All-Metro Player of the Year Immanuel Quickley because of an ankle injury, got a game-high 36 points from junior Montez Mathis. Quickley is expected to be able to return to practice next week. The Patriots are 4-2 overall and 1-1 in the league.

Mount Carmel 73, No. 9 St. Frances 71: Terry Nolan scored a game-high 25 points, and the host Cougars (6-0, 2-0 MIAA A Conference Red Division) took control early and held off a late rally to upset the Panthers (1-3, 1-1).

St. Frances trailed by 11 points in the first half but rallied to within one point with two minutes left in the game. But Mount Carmel made its free throws, going 23-for-32 in the game, and held on.

No. 1 Mount Saint Joseph 65, Loyola Blakefield 51: The host Dons (1-3, 0-2 MIAA A Conference Black Division) suffered their second straight loss, falling to the Gaels (6-0, 2-0).

Century 62, Franklin 56: Zach Turner scored a game-high 31 points to lead the Knights (2-0) past the host Indians (1-1).

Edmondson 84, Bluford Drew Jemison 57: Dontez Dean scored 17 points to lead the host Red Storm (1-0) past the Rockets (0-1).

Hammond 55, Oakland Mills 43: Ryan Ridgell scored 15 points to lead the Bears (1-1) past the host Scorpions (0-1).

Annapolis Area Christian 83, Saints Peter & Paul 40: Brandon Joseph had 25 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Eagles (3-2) past the host Sabres (0-3).

Kenwood 76, Patapsco 53: Pharaoh Walker scored 32 points, including five 3-pointers, to power the host Bluebirds (1-0) past the Patriots (1-1).

No. 9 Patterson Mill 55, North Harford 21: Chyna Latimer scored a game-high 20 points to help the visiting Huskies (2-0) beat the Hawks (0-1).

No. 10 Roland Park 52, Coppin Academy 15: Mir McLean scored 15 points and the host Reds (2-1) rolled past the Golden Eagles (4-5).

No. 13 John Carroll 71, Notre Dame Prep 39: Branyelle Carillo and Savannah Simmons scored 15 points each to power the host Patriots (3-0) past the Blazers (0-2).

River Hill 49, Wilde Lake 32: Sarah Dawit scored 10 points to lead the host Hawks (1-1) past the Wildecats (0-2).
