RED SOX: Star slugger J.D. Martinez went 0-for-2 in his spring training debut Wednesday, just three weeks before opening day. “He’s not behind at all,” manager Alex Cora said. Although Martinez will be the team’s primary DH, he also is expected to get time in the field. With the Red Sox playing split-squad games, he played LF and batted cleanup. Facing Twins RHP Jake Odorizzi, Martinez twice flied out.
RAYS: Manager Kevin Cash said the team intends to use a four-man pitching rotation while filling a fifth starter’s role with a combination of multi-inning relievers. “We’re going to schedule in a bullpen day as our fifth starter,” Cash said, noting the Rays will “learn a lot in the first six weeks” while determining whether it’s feasible for an entire season. The projected rotation currently features Chris Archer, Nathan Eovaldi, Blake Snell and Jake Faria.
CARDINALS: Closer Luke Gregerson is expected to be sidelined for at least several days with tightness in his oblique. Gregerson, who signed a two-year, $11 million contract, has appeared in one exhibition game, striking out two in a hitless inning Saturday.
