DETROIT — The last time the Orioles played a Friday night game at the Tigers’ Comerica Park, they failed to reach base through seven innings and were no-hit until two outs in the ninth.
This Friday, the Orioles didn’t record a single hit, but it was Mother Nature who shut Baltimore’s bats down. The Orioles’ game against the Tigers on Friday evening was postponed because of rain. The forecast of in-and-out rain made it difficult to envision getting the game, originally scheduled for 6:40 p.m., in at a reasonable hour.
With the weather more cooperative Saturday, the Orioles and Tigers elected to push Friday’s game — Baltimore’s second postponement this season — to Saturday. The clubs will play a split-admission doubleheader with the first game scheduled for 1:10 p.m. and the second at 6:10 p.m.
When the Orioles take the field Saturday for the first of 18 innings, they’ll hope to continue the momentum built at the end of the series against the Washington Nationals. After a close loss Wednesday, the Orioles won 2-1 on Thursday behind a steady outing from a starting pitcher, clutch hitting from the offense, solid defense and a stout bullpen.
“These guys are grinding right now,” manager Brandon Hyde said. “To get a win like that, it’s a boost.”
The loss to the Tigers last September — when the Orioles were nearly no-hit — served as rock bottom for a team that spent the second half playing mediocre baseball. That level of play has extended into 2025 with a 10-14 start caused by shoddy starting pitching, inconsistent offense and uncharacteristic fielding and base running blunders.
“I think today’s a big confidence-builder, winning a close ballgame like this,” veteran Ryan O’Hearn said after Thursday’s win. “We haven’t had too many like this this year. I think when you can hold on at the end there, and have Félix come in and get the big save and stuff like that, it just builds confidence for everybody.
“Happy with the way we played tonight, take it to Detroit and do the same thing.”
Brandon Young and Charlie Morton — the scheduled starters for Friday and Saturday, respectively — will presumably start the two games of the doubleheader. The Orioles have yet to announce the order.
