On Friday afternoon, a pilot at Martin State Airport got to the plane he was scheduled to fly only to find someone was already sitting in the captain’s seat.
“I looked up and there was someone sitting in the left seat with the headset on, so I’m like this is interesting,” said pilot T.J. Turbin. “It was a complete surprise, like, OK something is wrong, what’s wrong, let’s figure out what’s wrong. I have never seen this in my whole career in aviation. I have never seen anything like that.”
Turbin said the man told him he was there for a contract flight, but that the plane already had a crew.
The suspect, Joseph Goldman, 43, is no stranger to run-ins with law enforcement.
In 2017, Goldman was arrested and charged with first- and second-degree rape, second-, third- and fourth-degree sex offenses, first- and second-degree assault, perverted practice and related charges. Officers also recovered suspected marijuana, two handguns, one shotgun with an altered barrel, one rifle and a homemade silencer — weapons for which Goldman was later federally charged.
Maryland State Police responded to the airport and provided a statement on the incident.
“According to a preliminary investigation, the suspect, identified as Joseph Goldman, illegally drove past security onto airport grounds. The suspect then left his vehicle and entered an empty aircraft. MSP Criminal Enforcement Division responded and a K-9 unit conducted a vehicle scan.”
The plane Goldman is accused of trying to steal is owned by David Smith, chairman of Sinclair Broadcast Group.
