Man found dead in a fire
in Belair-Edison house
A man was found dead inside a burning home in Baltimore’s Belair-Edison neighborhood Friday morning, the Fire Department said. Firefighters responded to a house fire in the 3600 block of Lyndale Ave. Heavy smoke was visible from multiple floors when crews arrived. The fire was extinguished, and the cause of the blaze is under investigation, the fire department said. The victim’s name and age were not immediately released. The fatal fire comes a day after another man was found dead inside a burning home. Fire crews found the body of a 55-year-old man while fighting a blaze at a Brooklyn rowhome Thursday.
Substitute teacher accused of taping child to chair
A substitute teacher at Lake Shore Elementary School in Pasadena taped a second-grade student to a chair this week, according to a letter sent to parents by the school’s principal. Julie Little-McVearry, Lake Shore principal, said in the letter the long-term substitute teacher has been removed from the school and would not be placed in any Anne Arundel County school until “the matter is resolved.” “During regular classroom instruction, the teacher, a long-term substitute, remarked to a student that if he did not return to his seat, she would tape him to his chair. The student found the remark funny, and the teacher proceeded to do as she said she would,” Little-McVearry said in the letter. Little-McVearry said she was made aware of it Wednesday night by a parent at the school. Little-McVearry said in the letter that the substitute teacher’s conduct “is never acceptable in a school setting,” adding that she notified police. Police investigated and no criminal charges were filed, county police spokesman Marc Limansky said. Schools spokesman Bob Mosier said, “The indications at this point are that the incident happened in a playful manner on both sides,”

Midshipman pleads guilty to drug charges
A midshipman pleaded guilty this week to drug charges stemming from a Navy investigation into drug use at the Naval Academy. Zachary Williams pleaded guilty Tuesday to possession of drugs with intent to distribute, using drugs, bringing drugs to the Naval Academy and distributing those substances to fellow midshipmen. Williams, a midshipman second class, also pleaded guilty to violating the Uniform Code of Military Justice and failure to obey a general regulation. The Navy will dismiss Williams, and he will serve 13 months in confinement. Williams’ charges resulted from a Naval Criminal Investigative Service investigation that began about a year ago after other midshipmen reported Williams for selling and using drugs.
Teens face new charges in Damascus High assaults
Four Maryland teenagers accused of sexually assaulting football teammates in a locker room were indicted Thursday by a grand jury, with additional conspiracy charges that line up with prosecutors’ contention that the suspects acted together during the alleged broomstick attacks at Damascus High School. The suspects, all 15, had earlier been charged with five counts each: one count of first-degree rape, three counts of attempted first-degree rape and one count of conspiracy to commit first-degree rape. The indictments added three more conspiracy charges for each suspect, according to the Montgomery County state’s attorney’s office. The four suspects — Jean Claude Abedi, Kristian Jamal Lee, Will Smith and Caleb Thorpe — have all been charged as adults. They played on the junior varsity squad at Damascus, as did the four alleged victims in the case.
