Adichie headlines Books in Bloom
Nigerian among writers to be at festival in Symphony Woods on June 11
Best-selling Nigerian writer Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie will appear at Howard County’s Books in Bloom festival, noon to 5 p.m. Sunday, June 11, at Symphony Woods in downtown Columbia.
Hosted by the Downtown Columbia Partnership in cooperation with the Howard County Public Library, the event will bring together two dozen writers for a daylong festival of readings, panel discussions and author conversations in the new Chrysalis amphitheater. Adichie is the author of “We Should All be Feminists” and the best-selling “Americanah” and has received awards including the Orange Broadband Prize for Fiction and a MacArthurFoundation Fellowship.
Among the festival’s other headlining authors are journalist April Ryan, a White House correspondent for American Urban Radio Networks and political analyst for CNN; and Michael Eric Dyson, contributing opinion writer for The New York Times and professor who has been named one of Ebony Magazine’s 100 Most Influential People.
Ryan and Dyson will be paired for a conversation on race in America, moderated by civil rights activist DeRay Mckesson.
In addition, David Ebershoff, author of “The Danish Girl,” will read from his work, which was adapted into an Oscarnominated film of the same title. Other featured writers include Mikita Brottman, Jennifer Close, Laurel Frankel, Katherine Heiny, Eric Puchner, Alec Ross, Ursula Werner and Ariel Winter.
A panel on Feminism in Young Adult Fiction will include writers Sonia Belasco, author of “Speak of Me as I Am;” Christina June, “It Started With Goodbye;” Miranda Upperman, “Kissing Max Holden.”

Other features will include a panel discussion of summer reading; a children’s stage with children’s authors performing readings with interactive activities; and a pop-up book store. Crafts, games and activities will presented by the county library as part of the launch of its Summer @Your Library program.
