The historic Pikes Theatre building in Pikesville is closing its doors again as the independent theater within, Next Act Cinema, shuts down.

A statement posted by the business on social media said in part, “It is with a heavy heart that we announce the closing of Next Act Cinema on December 30, 2024. For the past seven years, we’ve had the privilege of bringing the magic of movies to Pikesville and creating a space where stories came to life, memories were made, and connections were built. Your unwavering support, from attending screenings to sharing laughs and celebrating milestones with us, has meant the world. “

Co-owners Anthony Fykes and Robert Wright renovated the historic, 86-seat theater on Reisterstown Road that originally operated from the late 1930s to the early 1980s. The Art Deco theater later reopened for a brief stint in the 2010s before closing again in 2016. Next Act opened in early 2019.

Next Act Cinema was one of the few Black-owned theaters in the country.

“We convinced ourselves that despite the risks, the community would make it work,” Fykes told The Baltimore Sun in 2020.
