4th-down call key in Harbaugh battle

Coaches normally don’t go for it on fourth-and-1 on their own 16-yard line when they’re trailing 10-7 with 2 minutes to go in the first half. However, when you’re coaching against your younger brother on the opposing sideline, sometimes you have to be aggressive and go all in. In the case of John Harbaugh and the Ravens, it ended up paying off big time. Mark Andrews’ 2-yard gain on a QB sneak not only allowed the Ravens to continue their drive, it ended up later turning into a TD that gave them the lead against the Chargers on Monday night. It also was the turning point in the Ravens’ 30-23 road win that allowed John, above, to remain unbeaten in three meetings against younger brother, Jim. The brothers shared a hug and handshake at midfield after the game. They also hugged and talked for a couple minutes during pregame warmups. It was the first time since Super Bowl 47 in Feb. 2013 that the Harbaugh brothers faced off as NFL coaches. The Ravens beat the 49ers 34-31 in New Orleans. The other was a 16-6 Ravens victory over the 49ers on Thanksgiving night in 2011.

Woods won’t tee it up at own tourney

Tiger Woods won’t be playing in the Bahamas next week at the Hero World Challenge as he recovers from a sixth back surgery he had in September. In announcing Monday on social media he won’t be playing, Woods said the 20-man field for his holiday tournament next week will be filled out by Justin Thomas, Nick Dunlap and Jason Day. World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler is the defending champ. The 48-year-old Woods was unlikely to play in the Bahamas since disclosing Sept. 13 he had yet another surgery on his lower back — his sixth in 10 years — that he hoped would relieve some of the spasms he had experienced this year. The recovery time for the latest procedure typically is eight to 12 weeks. Woods said while he was disappointed not to play, he looked forward to his role as the tournament host. Woods finished 18th in the 20-man field a year ago. The 15-time major champ is far more likely to play the PNC Challenge on Dec. 14-15 in Orlando, Florida, a 36-hole event with his son, Charlie. Woods is allowed to ride a cart that week because it is sanctioned by the PGA Tour Champions.

New No. 1 UCLA heading to Hawaii

UCLA, along with many other of the top teams, are heading to Thanksgiving tournaments in warm locations this week. The newly crowned No. 1 Bruins are headed to Hawaii for the Rainbow Wahine Tournament where they’ll face UT Martin, Fresno State and Hawaii over three days. Coach Cori Close loves the challenge of it. “The turnaround and opportunity helps us prepare at a championship level as a habit,” Close, above, said. “It’s mostly mental preparation and create our own urgency. Not to believe our own press clippings, but how do we get better this week and stay focused.” This is the first time the school’s been No. 1 in The Associated Press women’s basketball poll. The best game of the week may come in the Cayman Islands when No. 3 Notre Dame faces 17th-ranked TCU on Friday. The schools boast two of the best offenses in the game with the Irish led by a dynamic backcourt of Olivia Miles and Hannah Hidalgo. The Horned Frogs, who have their best ranking since 2004, are led by the inside-outside duo of Sedona Prince and Hailey Van Lith. —Associated Press
