A wild weekend shakes up the rankings. Eight teams ranked in the top 25 lost, including three previously undefeated teams in Georgia, West Virginia and Colorado. Four ranked teams had to rally to avoid losses, including Notre Dame and Florida. It opened the door for a seismic shift in the polls.

Justin Fields could be just what Georgia needs to jump-start its offense. The Bulldogs’ playoff hopes took a huge hit thanks to an LSU defense that sacked Jake Fromm three times and forced four turnovers. The talented Fields has been used sparingly this season, but perhaps it is the time for Kirby Smart to utilize the freshman quarterback more.

Notre Dame continues its trek toward the playoff. The Irish went into their game with Pittsburgh as three-touchdown favorites, but they found themselves trailing 14-6 in the third quarter before Ian Book engineered two late scoring drives to pull off the win. It wasn’t pretty, but if Notre Dame can avoid a letdown the rest of the way, the semifinals await.

Iowa State relishes the role of spoiler. The Cyclones shut down West Virginia’s potent offense, limiting it to 148 yards in a 30-14 upset that knocked the Mountaineers’ from the ranks of the unbeaten. It was the fourth time Iowa State has defeated a ranked team in October in the last two seasons.

Texas is once again relevant in the Big 12. Since losing to Maryland in the season opener, the Longhorns have looked like a different team, rattling off six consecutive wins, including four straight against conference foes that include potent Oklahoma and TCU.

Michigan makes the case it is the second-best team in the Big Ten. The knock on Jim Harbaugh at Michigan has been his team’s inability to win big games, earning a 2-6 record against top 25 teams since 2016. But the tone has changed thanks to a suffocating defense that’s helped the Wolverines win six consecutive games.

The Pac-12’s playoff hopes have disappeared. Even before the start of the weekend, the conference’s chances of landing a team in the playoff were slim. After undefeated Colorado and Washington lost, it’s hard to imagine any scenario in which a Pac-12 team earns a semifinal bid.

Auburn goes from contender to pretender in two short weeks. The Tigers were a top 10 team after their big win over Washington, but back-to-back losses to Mississippi State and Tennessee knocked Auburn out of the top 25.

Central Florida and South Florida manage comebacks to keep Group of 5 hopes alive. Three of the eight remaining undefeated FBS teams are members of the AAC, but it took second-half heroics from UCF and USF. The teams rallied from double-digit deficits to remain unbeaten and keep the league in contention for another New Year’s Six bowl.

It’s a two-man race for the Heisman Trophy. Alabama’s Tua Tagovailoa and Ohio State’s Dwayne Haskins continue to impress. Oklahoma’s Kyler Murray could make a run at the trophy, but it’s hard to imagine anyone but Tagovailoa or Haskins winning college football’s biggest prize.
