Fifth-ranked Archbishop Spalding scored 20 unanswered points in the fourth quarter and turn back host and 11th-ranked McDonogh, 34-17, in football on Saturday afternoon.

Jayden Umbarger started the fourth quarter onslaught for the Cavaliers (2-1), catching a 19-yard pass from Austin Tutas with 5:33 left to give Spalding the lead. Umbarger then scored on a 53-yard run with 3:12 remaining and Alex Green returned an interception for a touchdown to cap the Spalding scoring.

Umbarger finished with 125 yards rushing on 14 carries and 30 yards receiving on three catches. Jayon Vereable rushed for 98 yards on 24 carries for Spalding and Chris Clark had five receptions for 64 yards. Tutas completed 12 of 21 passes for 149 yards.

Kellen Wyatt led the Cavaliers defense with eight solo tackles. Umbarger added six solo tackles.

McDonogh dropped to 2-3.

South Carroll 28, Winters Mill 26: Mason Gavin led South Carroll into a first-and-goal scenario late in Saturday’s game against Winters Mill with the clock winding down and the Cavaliers out of timeouts.

Then, disaster for the Cavs — Gavin turned backward and ran toward the ball as it skidded past him on a botched snap. He fell on it around the 12-yard line, and SC faced third down with time ticking away.

The senior kept his composure on the next pay, however, and it wound being the biggest of the game — Gavin used his legs to avoid pressure from the Falcons and found Brett Finzel for a touchdown pass with 20 seconds to play. An extra point later, South Carroll led 28-26.

The defense held on Winters Mill’s final possession, and the Cavs left Parker Field with a win in their Carroll County Athletic League opener.

Havre de Grace 17, Bel Air 7: Havre de Grace used two touchdown passes from senior quarterback Alec Gresock and four interceptions from its defense to beat host Bel Air on Friday night in a UCBAC Chesapeake Division game. The win kept the Warriors unbeaten at 5-0 overall and 2-0 in division play. The Bobcats fell to 1-3 overall and 1-1 in division action.

Oakland Mills 44, Marriotts Ridge 12: Having lost to Marriotts Ridge each of the last three seasons, Oakland Mills coach Tom Browne decided to throw a new wrinkle into the playbook prior to Friday’s annual meeting between the two class 2A rivals.

Pounding the ball on the ground with two tight-end sets, it didn’t take long for the traditionally pass-first Scorpions (3-2) to reap the rewards. Oakland Mills (3-2) rushed the ball for more than 250 yards in the first half alone on the way to a 30-0 lead at intermission.

Boys soccer

Westminster 2, Damascus 1: Mitch Clark scored for the Owls (5-1) and they also benefited from an own goals. Nate Burnett had four saves.

Girls soccer

Westminster 6, F.S. Key 0: Hannah Green and Ava Boussy had two goals apiece, and Brie Dewan added three assists, and Westminster blanked Francis Scott Key in Carroll County Athletic League play Saturday at Western Regional Park in Woodbine. The Owls improved to 3-3, 1-0 in the county. Haley Sawyer made 11 saves for the Eagles (1-4, 0-2).

Glenelg Country 3, Mount de Sales 2: Jaclyn Marszal scored twiceand Brianna Chun had 12 saves to lead the Dragons to a nonconference triumph. Ava Swartz added a goal and an assist for Glenelg. Sarah Gibbons and Alex Sullivan scored for the Sailors.

Field hockey

No. 2 Archbishop Spalding 5, No. 9 Broadneck 2: The Cavaliers (8-1) rallied from a two goal deficit, evening the score at the half and then scoring three unanswered goals in the second half.

Haley Urgo and Katie Fichtner scored first-half goals for the Cavaliers and Margot Lawn scored the first two goals of the second half. Arianna Shea tipped in the fifth goal off a hard shot by Shelby Bumgarner.

Emil Eckels scored both of Broadneck’s goals and Alex Clugh recorded 11 saves for the Bruins.
